On Saturday, I participated in the Best Friends Animal Society annual Strut Your Mutt event in New York City. I joined the Treasured K9s team, an all-volunteer nonprofit animal rescue organization that does tremendous work to help animals in the Tri-State area.

Sparky had a great day at the Strut!

More than 1,000 animal lovers and hundreds of canines participated in the NYC Strut Your Mutt along the Hudson River, raising $250K for local rescue organizations! Since 1996, Best Friends’ Strut Your Mutt has raised critical funding to support lifesaving adoption and spay and neuter programs to save thousands of dogs and cats around the country.

I had the honor of “Strutting” with my friend’s 15-year-old dog, Sparky.

He was rescued by Treasured K9s after being dumped at a kill shelter by his owners.  Sparky has a collapsed trachea and a number of other health issues but is living out his senior years receiving the best medical care in a loving new home with my friend Karen. Together, Sparky and I ‘strolled’ on the Strut walk!

Sparky got a lot of attention with his sign!

Had it not been for Treasured K9s and the hundreds of other rescue groups participating in Strut Your Mutt from coast-to-coast, dogs like Sparky would not have a second chance.

Often people ask me, “How can I make a difference for animals?” I always say, “Find a local rescue organization or TNR group and get involved.” Every action on behalf of the animals can make a tremendous impact and it’s the smaller rescues, powered by compassionate volunteers that are making the biggest difference in the lives of animals.

Thank you to Best Friends Animal Society for an outstanding event to help raise funds for Treasured K9s and other animal rescue groups working together to #SaveThemAll.   ~ Patricia
